The first race of the newly established World Cup in marathon took place on Saturday, May 13 in Nové Město na Moravě. German champion Andreas Seewald took a solid 4th place. Martin Stošek finished in 15th position, Marc Stutzmann was 16th and Stefanie Dohrn, who finished in 5th place, showed a great performance in women category.
The elite riders lined up at 8:00 a.m., the women category five minutes later. The competitors had a 120 km long track with an elevation of over 2,500 meters ahead of them.
Martin Stošek had a bad start to the race, having to stop at the first feed zone due to technical problems. However, he soon returned to the front of the race and kept hopes of success alive for a long time.
After the illness, however, Martin did not feel in his best shape and fell out of the front at the 3.5 hour race.
"It's not the result I expected, I had a cold during the week and today it wasn't ideal. But I couldn't have expected more. Unfortunately I had a crash at the beginning of the race and I had to catch up. I tried to fight as hard as I could, but at 3 and a half hours they shut me down. The track was difficult, but I liked it, it was fair," said Martin Stošek.
German champion Andreas Seewald, on the other hand, was full of activity and took care of the pace of the race towards the end. In the final sprint of the twelve-member group, however, he was no longer one of the fastest riders and finished just below the podium in 4th place.
Marc Stutzmann finished in 16th position, Petr Vakoč did not succeed in the race and finished 66th.
A great performance in the elite women's category was shown by German Stefanie Dohrn, who finished in 5th position.
"I'm very happy with the performance, the track was tough and the race was long. I tried to save my strength at the beginning, I knew it would be long. Fortunately, I didn't run out of it at the end and I was able to overtake my rivals. I'm happy with fifth place and I'm very happy that I had a nice race. I liked the track and I hope to start here again," said Stefanie in the finish
